Press Corp

First off, Drommond argues that it is rediculous to deny the teaching of evolution. He supports and agrees with Darwin and his findings.

Brady then argues that men are not sponges, ( in regards to a tangent conversation that arose ) and that sponges can not think, but that god could make them think if he wanted to.

Drummond shows everyone a rock, which he explains is millions of yours old.

But according to Brady, the rock can't be that old, for the 'world was created in 4004bc' and this is proven in the ages of the profit.

The two begin to argue using their facts and rebuttals,
then spiral off into an argument regarding the legnth of the so called first day,

Brady admits that the first 'day' may not have been a 24 hour day, because there was no way to tell being that there was no sun yet.

Is this a fight over peoples beliefs and religion??

Brady calls Drummond a celebrated agnostic!

Jury and audience are at this point feeling more sympathetic towards Brady.

Drummond: ~If the sun wasn't created until the fourth day how were the first four measured, and more so, WHO measured them?

AT THIS POINT:
Brady is popular with the people, his arguments satisfy them, Drummonds arguments on the other hand are factual and compelling, but are not making the people happy.

Drummond begins to use both everyday logic and science to back his arguments, accuses Brady of speaking to god.

Brady has lost his popularity and can't come back. Apparently, he has spoken to god, and therefore seems arrogant. Brady becomes angry and shouts and pumps fist furthering his new stigma.
Brady has lost his popularity

INHERIT THE WIND

--------------
--------------

The Scope of an Outsider

The Cates trial has brought a long-oppressed issue to light: the teachings of science and religion in the classrooms of our children. Does religion have a place in scientific curriculum? Of course the children of Tennessee know the tales of Genesis and the teachings of the Lord, but should children associate science with the Bible? In the defense, Mr. Cates argues that they should solely be taught theories of evolution and natural selection as postulated by the controversial Charles Darwin himself with the aide of his lawyer, Mr. Drummond. The prosecution consists of Mr. Brady and the state of Tennessee. The state of Tennessee is prosecuting because of their "anti-evoution" laws which prohibit the teaching of evolutionary theories in public classrooms. The defense attacks the prosecution by proposing a series of questions that question the scientific validity of the Bible. While both sides present strong arguments, the jury and the audience end up favoring Mr. Brady and the position that he takes. Mr. Brady and the state of Tennessee do not believe in teaching young children anything that opposes the truths of the biblical account of creationism. Even though Mr. Cates did not win his trial, it has been a landmark event in that it brought forth the complexity of this controversy.

Quien ganara?

Scopes Monkey Trial

The Cates trial was about a man who taught Darwin's theory of Evolution in a school where The Bible and the story of the seven days of creation was very popular. Because this man told his students that humans are descendents of Apes, he was put on trial and eventually put into jail. The two lawyers who are fighting for and against Cates are Mr. Brady and Mr. Drummond. Mr Brady is against Cates because he believes in God and the Bible. He thinks that God created the earth in seven days and that God put humans on Earth. Mr. Drummond uses science and reason to try to win the case for Cates. He tries to tell people that the Bible is not the only source of information. In the end Mr. Drummond questions Mr. Brady so intently that Mr. Brady's emotions get the best of him and he looks like a fool. Cates was convivted because at the time all of the people in the courtroom were devout believers in God.

Greetings from Our Blog 2011-12

Welcome!  This is the start of many interesting things to come on this blog which was created to feature the work of students in U.S. History - Period B - class.  Our first of many blog assignments was to read aloud the play INHERIT THE WIND.  Certain students observed the play as part of an international press corps which attended this trial of the century or so-called "monkey trial."  Mr. John Scopes, a high school Biology teacher, went on trial for teaching the ideas of Darwin on evolution.  (In the play he is called Mr. Cates.)  These "reporters" wrote their articles about this trial in a variety of languages.  Other class members were asked to read any one of these articles, and to write a comment on it (using the COMMENT feature of the blog).  Enjoy!
