Author: Bonnie Rochman
Publication: cnn.com
Length: 735 words
A new study confirms that children have consistently gotten less sleep than recommended guidelines for at least the past 100 years. Researchers from the University of South Australia did some historical research from about eery reference of sleep duration in children beginning from the end of the 19th century through 2009. They had found in a French paper from 1897 that age-specific recommendations for appropriate sleep and the amount of time kids actually spend in sleep both declined at similar rates. Experts were recommending that kids sleep 1 hour and 15 min more than was advised in the year 2009. Research has found that twenty percent of kids feel sleepy in school and sixty percent said that they would want to get more sleep. Much sleep loss has been blamed on modern society and its technology such as ipods, televisions and computers.
This article is important because we are all not getting enough sleep, and not getting enough sleep may lead to medical problems and poor academic performance for kids of all ages.
