Title of article: Is a 'nudge' in the right direction all we need to be greener?

Length of article: 1074 Words

CNN Reporter George Webster believes that all we need to do to get a more green earth is to give our selves little targets to help us focus. In a Airport in Amsterdam a maintenance guy put little painted flies as targets on the urinal to try and lessen missing the toilet bowl. The Airport reported that the clean ups in the bathrooms throughout the Airport had dropped by 80%. George, our reporter, claims all we need is a similar idea to get us into become a more green society. He says that we, as a society, could use subtle nudges in the right direction, like how street signs on the highway tell us which lane to be in or how the gleam of a candy rapper can catch our eye so that we will buy, that sort of thing.

I personally believe that our friend George is on to something, if we could so much as give subtle visual cue would make people have the idea to be greener in the back of their brain. Recently in our society we have been smothered with the thought of being greener, we look left and right and we see people trying to make us recycle, compost, and even use solar power and other methods of Electricity. This makes people look away from the problems at hand, but if we use very subtle cues we could end up planting seeds in peoples brais to act more Green, in a more effective way.

  2. I found it very interesting that such simple additions as painting "target flies" on urinals can improve "aim" by such a large amount, and I think that using such techniques to help spread awareness about going green could have a great impact. Global warming is increasing every day, due to the use of fossil fuels and unnecessary waste emissions, and could eventually destroy our planet. The worst part is that most people in the world are unaware of this fact, and the more we spread awareness, the better it will be for our planet.

  3. I think that it is inspiring that society is trying to make our world greener in any way possible. Even the smallest of changes can help to decrease waste and make mother Earth a little healthier. By making our world greener, we can help combat global warming and also ozone depletion. A few steps in the right direction may help to spread awareness, and the more people that know about it, the better. Knowledge is key in the battle against ourselves to save the Earth.

  4. I found this article incredibly captivating (some would use the word interesting). It's fascinating that such simple changes in every day rituals such as throwing things away, or even peeing in a urinal, could help improve global clean up. I think that this should be implemented in to more things, like a much stronger recycling front, and alternative dumping methods for waste instead of large holes in the earth, and the ocean waters. As Ameya said above, an increased spread in awareness of these issues will go a long way to helping our planet.

  5. It is really funny how the human mind works sometimes. Definitely, looks play a huge role on everything we do and think. Although it is not always good to be guided only for the appearance of things, it is an unconscious action for the majority. Nevertheless, it can be turned to our benefit like in those examples described on the article and even on trying to increase the greener earth awareness. Undoubtedly, our eyes are a great tool if used wisely!

  6. This article is very intriguing. To think that such a simple thing as to add a decoration of a fly to a urinal reduces spills and messes by 80% is astounding. There are some people that believe that you must do everything you can to help the environment, but that is not the case. If everyone does a little to help it we can help the environment much more.

  7. I was surprised that the percent of cleanups in the airport had dropped by so much. I think the idea was very innovative and worked, so if we use some kind of other idea with the same purpose, we can make make global warming more spreadout. If people have the right ideas to ispire others, then we would be able to combat global warming.
